National Championships Discussion

National Championship Criterion

I believe the two major polls that have been in place (AP Poll since 1936 and Coaches Poll since 1950) plus the BCS are the undisputed sources for the National Championship selections.  Teams selected by these organizations will be awarded 50 points for National Championships in the Rankings.  Other National Championships will be awarded from the following selectors:

  • College Football Researchers Association (1919-1935)
  • Helms Athletic Foundation (1883-1935)
  • National Championship Foundation (1869-1935)
  • Football Writers Association of America (1954-Current)
  • National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame (1959-Current)

In general will use what the schools claim prior to 1936 and will use most of what the schools claim from 1936 and on.  15 points will be used in the Rankings for National Championships from this list from 1900 and on.

The problem with just using what the schools claim is the inconsistencies in the criterion used between the schools.

The Rankings will be updated after the 2009 season to reflect this modified criterion.

What Teams Claim

The below list is what I believe each school claims for National Championships:
